Project Overview: 2001-2002

Most of us haven't spent much time thinking about electricity, except on those occasions when we lose it. And in some parts of the United States, power cuts are becoming increasingly common! We shuffle in the dark, grumbling about the inconvenience until it miraculously reappears. Then we immediately go back to our television watching, our computing, and our laundry and forget all about this very important resource.

Through this project, students monitor electricity use in their school, compare this data with other schools, develop and implement a conservation plan, and try to significantly curtail electricity use and spending.

By the end of this teleproject, you will be able to...

  • Read an electric meter, record readings accurately, and determine the cost of electricity over time.
  • Input the gathered data into a spreadsheet.
  • Create graphs from this data to help visualize or recognize trends.
  • Use knowledge gained from data analysis to create an energy conservation plan.
  • Carry out an energy conservation plan.
  • Analyze results of an energy conservation plan.
  • Report the findings of your energy conservation plan.
